About Us
WAZIGA Background
Founded in March 2000, WAZIGA then known as the
Zimbabwe Independence Golf Tournament, is a golf
association for Zimbabweans living in the United
States of America. Its membership is open to non-
Zimbabweans. The primary goal at its inception was
simply to bring together Zimbabweans living in
Washington State via an informal golf tournament that
would be followed by a party in celebration of the
Zimbabwean Independence Anniversary around April
18 of each year. In 2000 only 6 players participated.
By 2002 the Zimbabwe Independence golf
tournament had grown to 18 players and that year the
founding members decided to donate the proceeds
from the tournament to a charity organization in
Zimbabwe. Given the success of the Zimbabwe
Independence tournaments championed by Mazvita
Maraire since 2000, the founding members decided
to expand the base of charity beneficiaries in
Zimbabwe.
In January 2006 the Washington State Golf
Association (WAZIGA) was incorporated as a non-
profit corporation to step up the fundraising efforts as
well as broaden WAZIGA’s goals.
